If a Single Thin T-Shirt Felt Like a Burden

When summer comes, clothes grow thin and worries, conversely, grow thick. A single thin T-shirt, nothing to others, becomes for those worried about gynecomastia a homework assignment that returns every season.

Today, through the review of a man who had surgery in early June, I'd like to describe the process of setting that homework down.

Two worries heavier than the surgery

What weighed on this patient most before coming to the clinic were the pain, and the post-surgery care. More than the surgery itself, the time before and after it felt more daunting.

A natural worry. So in the consultation we explain, as much as the surgery, the flow of the recovery period, wearing the compression garment, and the timing of returning to daily life. This patient too said his mind was only put at ease after hearing the explanation fully through the examination and consultation. Worry is not something erased, but something that shrinks as you come to know.

Let me say a little more about the compression garment. It's true the garment is confining. But it's a process to press the skin, stretched after surgery, closely against the chest so it adheres, so I always explain the reason. Once you know the reason, most people endure the discomfort well. For 12 to 48 hours right after surgery there is a risk of bleeding, so we add compression over the garment, but when you come in the next day and we check for bleeding and remove that extra compression, it becomes much more comfortable, with no great strain on working life.

"I want to wear a thin T-shirt in summer and exercise freely"

When I asked what he most wanted to do after surgery, this patient wrote:

"I want to wear a thin T-shirt in summer and exercise freely."

Not a grand wish. To wear clothes suited to the season and move your body without minding others. What most people want to recover is such an ordinary daily life. And that ordinariness is the best reason of all for a long-postponed decision.

Regarding exercise, I advise not doing upper-body exercise during the recovery period. Instead, light walking or lower-body squats are fine. I recommend that after some recovery has passed, they buy a body-fitting shirt and try it on. By wearing clothes they'd never been able to wear, I mean for them to feel directly that they've now become free from the fear that gynecomastia had been.

"Thank you for doing the surgery so well"

The last line of the review he left as he was discharged was short.

"Thank you for doing the surgery so well."

This patient also left words to others with the same worry, hoping they'd recover their confidence even a day sooner. But this came from his experience, and whether surgery is needed is best decided after confirming your own condition through an examination.

If this summer too you're hesitating before a single thin T-shirt, I hope you won't worry alone but will come once and talk. I can't solve everything for you, but most people leave with their questions sorted out. I sincerely want to help.
