His biggest worry

Insurance coverage and the treatment process were his main questions

Ahead of his surgery, what this patient cared about most were insurance coverage and how the treatment would proceed.

He wanted to know exactly how his private health insurance would apply and what order the treatment would follow. Much of vague anxiety comes from ‘not knowing.’ That's why we never cut corners on time spent in the consultation room, explaining the process thoroughly.

First impression

“The doctor explained everything so well”

When we asked about his first impression of the clinic, he named two things.

“The staff were kind, and the doctor explained everything so well.”

Answering every one of a patient's questions all the way through is, I believe, just as important a part of care as surgical skill itself.

During surgery

“Thank you for speaking so reassuringly”

When we asked what moment stayed with him most during the surgery, this was his answer.

“Thank you for speaking to me so reassuringly.”

I find myself returning to that one sentence. Surgery isn't something a patient should simply endure in tension — helping them finish it in a state of calm is part of our role, too.

After surgery

“Back to working out”

When we asked what he most wanted to do after surgery, the answer was short and clear.

“Exercise.”

Reclaiming the everyday life he had put off because of his chest. When we asked for a word to others facing the same worry, he said he would "recommend it without hesitation." And when we asked what he hoped from Trueman, the answer came back: "Just keep doing what you're doing."
