Why Do Some Men Prefer Oversized Clothes? Could It Be Gynecomastia?
Why Do Some Men Prefer Oversized Clothes?
Could It Be Gynecomastia?
Many men with gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) deliberately
choose oversized clothing to hide their developed chest.

They often look for tops with a chest pocket that makes nipple protrusion less noticeable,
or favor roomy, loose-fitting sweatshirts that conceal their body shape.

The problem is that this habit continues into the summer.
Unable to wear thin, light clothing even in hot weather, they layer up instead,
which easily leads to skin conditions such as heat rash and fungal infections.
It does not stop there. To keep the chest from showing, some deliberately
hunch their shoulders and cave in their chest,
hiding their posture.
If this slouched posture persists through the growth years, it can lead to
skeletal changes, and the poor posture can ultimately become fixed well into adulthood.
This is why a fundamental solution is needed —
not the temporary fix of covering up with clothes.
If your child wears thick clothing or multiple layers even in midsummer,
or cannot straighten up because of a hunched posture,
gynecomastia is worth considering.
If this leads to being teased at school or becoming withdrawn and struggling to
fit in with friends, it can go beyond a simple physical issue and
grow into a social, psychological, and educational problem.
Most men only recognize the problem as adults and
seek surgical treatment on their own.
But if parents notice early and take appropriate action, the problem can be kept from getting worse.
Because gynecomastia is often linked to obesity, it is a good idea to
try weight management first.
If dieting does not bring improvement, an accurate diagnosis at a
specialized medical clinic is essential.
Gynecomastia caused by obesity can improve with
weight loss alone, but true gynecomastia caused by excessive growth of
glandular tissue requires surgical treatment.
Conversely, when glandular growth is mild, it may resolve on its own
after puberty — so if symptoms are not severe, correcting misconceptions about
appearance and simply monitoring until adulthood is also an option.
In particular, if the breasts have developed despite not being overweight,
true gynecomastia is highly likely — so it is best to visit a clinic
first for an accurate evaluation.

In the end,
behind a man's preference for oversized clothes may lie not a simple fashion choice,
but the hidden physical insecurity of gynecomastia.
If you notice this in someone around you,
why not take a moment to consider this possibility?
