I Think I'll Be Able to Wear Thin Clothes This Summer
When summer comes, the Bundang consultation room grows busy.
Because the season that could be hidden under thick clothing is ending. For those who exercise especially, summer is an awkward season. Thin functional clothing reveals the body's contour as it is.
This is the story of a patient who had surgery at the end of June.
The moment cost worry turned into anticipation
What this patient worried about at first were two things: cost, and the change after surgery.
In consultation, hearing that gynecomastia may be eligible for national health insurance coverage if it meets conditions such as diagnostic criteria, his worry turned into anticipation, he said. Of course, whether coverage applies is confirmed after examination and diagnosis. Still, vaguely guessing at a large burden and putting it off, versus knowing precisely where your own case falls, are two entirely different things.
When the explanation is sufficient, the burden lessens
When I asked for his first impression of the clinic, he said that thanks to the kind explanations from the doctor and the manager, the burden grew lighter.
In consultation, I watch whether a patient uses up all their questions before leaving. If you decide on surgery with a question still remaining, that empty space is invariably filled with anxiety. An explanation is not a service but a part of the treatment, I believe.
The memory of waking up
His memory of the surgery, this patient wrote thus:
"I was under sedation so I have no memory of it, but when I woke there was no pain and I felt comfortable."
This was so in his case, and how one feels after waking from anesthesia, and the degree of pain, differ from person to person. Even so, there is something many patients say in common. That the time they feared most turned out, in hindsight, to be the time least remembered.
A body that doesn't avoid summer
When I asked what he wanted to do after surgery, this patient spoke of the season. "I couldn't wear thin functional clothes in summer, but now I think I'll be able to."
Not having to calculate the season in front of the closet. That is the daily life this surgery changes. To those with the same concern, he left the words, "Rather than agonizing alone, I recommend having a consultation first." This is a word drawn from his own experience, and whether surgery is needed is something to judge after confirming your own condition through an examination.
He also gave the request that we keep on just as steadily as now. With that steadiness, we will wait for those preparing for the next summer.
