I Want to Comfortably Wear a Short-Sleeve Tee and Exercise

That getting oneself seated in the consultation room is the hardest part — I know this well.

A chest concern is different from other concerns. To have a consultation, you have to show that part of yourself to someone. To reveal, before a doctor you're meeting for the first time, a part you've long kept hidden — that itself is a great decision.

The patient I'll introduce today was the same. Before the surgical result, "having to show my chest to another person" was what burdened him, he said.

Opening the door of the consultation room is half of it

This patient had both gynecomastia and inverted nipples. His concern was not one but two. On top of worry about complications, the burden of having to show his body was layered as well.

So with patients like this, I do not start with talk of results. Creating an atmosphere in which they can show themselves at ease comes first. Whether the two problems can be corrected together in a single surgery, and in what order it proceeds, I explain step by step after that.

There is a reason the tension eases

When I asked how his first visit felt, he said it was as comfortable as a place he'd been to many times. In the bright atmosphere, he said, his tension naturally disappeared.

If there is one thing our staff are especially good at, it is not treating a first-time visitor like a first-timer. So that hard-won courage is not broken by awkwardness, we try to keep that warmth.

Even on the operating table, the conversation continues

About the surgery, this patient wrote:

"It didn't hurt at all, and I liked that they kindly talked with me to ease my tension right to the end."

Of course, this is his case. Because the degree to which one feels pain differs from person to person, we cannot say every patient will have the same experience. But being present, watching over the patient's tension until the moment the surgery ends — that is something we do the same for everyone.

The weight of a single short-sleeve tee

When I asked what he most wanted to do after surgery, the answer was modest. "I want to comfortably wear a short-sleeve tee and exercise."

A single short-sleeve tee that is nothing to some is, to others, a long-postponed wish. To those with the same concern, he left this: "Don't agonize alone — just come and have a consultation first."

Let me add only one word to this. A consultation is not a decision but a confirmation. After knowing your condition precisely, it is not too late to judge whether to have surgery then.

So that hard-won courage like his is not in vain, I will stay in this place for a long time.
