Pain and the Compression Garment: The Real Size of the Worry
Before surgery, this patient had two worries: how much it would hurt, and whether he could endure the compression garment in the warming weather. Looking back, in his case the pain was less than he had feared, and the weather was still bearable, so the compression garment was not too uncomfortable. The worries we sketch in advance are often inflated beyond reality. That said, the degree of pain and the course of recovery differ from person to person, so rather than making the worries vanish, we try to give explanations that cut them down to their actual size.
I Believe Trust Comes from Attention to Detail
This patient said his trust grew steadily through the course of care. The reasons he named were systematic management and detailed diagnosis. Gynecomastia may look similar on the surface, but the ratio of glandular tissue to fat and the condition of the skin differ from person to person. Diagnosis must be detailed for the surgical plan to be precise, and management must be systematic for that plan to be carried through to the end. It means a great deal to us that this patient recognized this process.

Of the day of surgery, this patient recalled that the medical team moved in perfect coordination. And he said he appreciated the careful follow-up measures that continued at each stage of recovery. Surgery is not something the operating surgeon does alone. To the question of what he most wanted to do after surgery, this patient left an answer with his own particular wit: "I always wore mostly oversized summer clothes, but now, a T-shirt that shows the body??" I could see the excitement held in those two question marks. The longer someone has chosen clothes to hide the body, the more a single body-revealing shirt becomes both a great challenge and a great joy. I hope that challenge is a joyful one this summer.

The words he left for others facing the same struggle were short and forceful: "Don't overthink it — just do it." I received his expression of satisfaction with gratitude. Still, this comes from his own experience, and whether to have surgery is something to judge after confirming your own condition through a consultation.
