Recovery Was Quick, and I'm Back to Training

This feedback came in at four weeks after surgery. He had started training again in the third week and said he now has no pain at all. "Clothes are comfortable, and recovery was quick, so I'm back to training." Having followed his progress, I was glad to see that pace.

The one line he left afterwards

In truth, when recovery goes smoothly, that pace is not unusual. Absent any particular problem, we advise patients that they can resume exercise from around the fourth week. What matters here is that the two things he worried about before surgery — how long until he could train again, and the shape of his chest afterward — both resolved as expected.

What he most wants to do after surgery

About the day itself, he wrote that meeting me beforehand and talking through how the surgery would proceed put him at ease. It is a little awkward to quote a sentence with my own name in it, but this is a practice I have kept for a long time. For the person lying on the operating table, knowing what is about to happen to his body is a completely different experience from not knowing. There are times when a few minutes of the surgeon explaining the day's plan face to face settles a patient more than any sedative.

Of the clinic, he wrote that it was clean, the staff were kind, and the explanations were thorough. To men with the same concern he wrote that sooner is better and that the aftercare was excellent. Aftercare may sound like a small thing, but what needs attention keeps changing from stage to stage, from wearing the compression garment to how much exertion is permitted. That he kept up with that process was, in my view, part of the reason for his recovery speed.

To anyone with the same concern

That "clothes are comfortable" and "I'm training again" sit side by side in one sentence is really the whole of this feedback. What the surgery gave back to him was those two things — the daily life he had been deferring. His training has only just returned to its rhythm, so I'd tell him to build up slowly, and I'll see him at his next appointment with further progress.
