My Quality of Life Changed

Recovery from gynecomastia surgery does not end on the operating table. The first few days are spent in a compression garment, the swelling subsides over several weeks, and the chest takes longer still to settle into its shape. The surgery is one day; the result is completed over weeks and months. That is why, in the consultation room, I say that how you spend this period matters as much as the operation itself.

To anyone with the same concern

Having come through that period, this patient wrote: "If you follow what the doctors tell you, it gets better with time." Before surgery he had worried about side effects such as sagging and pain. How long to wear the compression garment, when to resume exercise, when to come in for follow-up — these look like small things, but men who keep to them generally recover smoothly, and he was one of them.

What he most wants to do after surgery

His answers were uniformly short. To the question about his first impression of the clinic, only that the staff were kind and seemed knowledgeable; to the question about what he remembered from the surgery, "nothing." I liked that brevity. It means the surgery did not lodge in his memory as a dramatic event — that the things he had feared passed without incident.

In the box asking what he most wanted to do afterward, there was a single word: "the course." Meaning he wanted to get out on the golf course. If something used to nag at him under his shirt with every swing, he can now just watch the ball and hit it.

To anyone with the same concern

And the line he left for men facing the same concern carried more weight than his other answers: "Would absolutely recommend it. My quality of life changed." That said, this comes out of his own experience. Whether surgery is appropriate is something to establish through examination first; the decision comes after. Still, the encouragement he wrote under suggestions for the clinic — "keep it up" — stays with me longer precisely because it came from a man who otherwise chose only the shortest words. I'll return it just as briefly: good scores out there, and keep it up.
