It Was Easier Than I Thought

"I thought about it for a long time, but it was easier than I thought, and I found myself wishing I'd done it sooner." That is the line this patient left at the end of his feedback. It is also what men who spent years deliberating say most often once the surgery is behind them.

What he said afterwards

Before deciding, what worried him most was pain. The longer someone deliberates, the longer he has usually spent building up an image of that pain. His answer after going through it was simple: "There was far less pain than I had worried about." Of course, I can't say this is a procedure with no pain at all. But there is often a wide gap between the pain built up in the mind and the pain the body actually experiences, and I frequently see how much lighter men feel the moment they measure that gap for themselves.

What he remembers of the surgery

On his first visit, he wrote, the clinic felt kind and private. That word — private — stood out to me. Many men arrive having never raised this with even their own family. It is characteristic of this field that simply passing someone in the waiting room is uncomfortable, so we keep paying attention to patient flow and to how we greet people. I'm glad it registered.

As a moment he remembered, he wrote that hearing the surgery had gone well put him at ease. I make a point of telling patients how it went, plainly, once the procedure is over. When you open your eyes, that one sentence is what you most want to hear.

To anyone with the same concern

What he most wants to do next is train hard and get in shape. When a man who had been putting off exercise because of his chest starts planning workouts right after surgery, it reminds me that surgery is not an ending but a beginning. Having waited so long, he can now work through the things he had shelved, one at a time. I hope the time ahead is one of looking forward to the changes in the mirror.
