The Longer You've Hidden It, the Lighter You'll Feel
The Longer You've Hidden It,
the Lighter You'll Feel
Gynecomastia is not a concern that appears overnight. For many men, the worry about their chest began long ago, back in their growing years.
You hesitate one extra beat every time you pick out clothes, and you naturally steer away from short sleeves or polo shirts — anything that reveals the outline of your body. When the hiding goes on long enough, the concern quietly grows beyond appearance and becomes a matter of the heart.
Today, borrowing the story of a patient who endured that long stretch alone before coming to us, I would like to write a few words for those carrying the same concern.
His biggest worry was an ‘unwanted result.’ What this patient feared most before surgery was the possibility of an outcome he did not want.
Because this is a surgery that changes how you look, not being able to picture the result in advance is a heavy burden for anyone. That is why, in consultation, I take the time to fully explain each patient's chest condition and tissue characteristics, and to speak honestly about what kind of result can be expected.
"More satisfying than I ever expected"
What he told us after his surgery
It reminded me once again that the greater the vague fear, the greater the relief when the real result is finally in front of you.

Being among men made it easier. The chest is not a part of the body anyone shows easily. That is why so many patients tell us that on their first visit, simply having to expose it feels like a burden.
This patient shared that worry when he first came to us. But with male medical staff attending to him, and a consultation that walked through his questions and concerns one by one, he told us his mind grew much more at ease.
This is why Trueman Gwangju maintains an all-male medical team. The harder a concern is to put into words, the more we believe an environment where you can speak comfortably must come first.
Easing the tension on the operating table. Even when surgery is performed under sleep anesthesia, everyone tenses up the moment they lie down on the table.
This patient felt that tension rising too, but as the medical team beside him spoke with him and put him at ease, he said he was able to go through the surgery comfortably.
Surgery is not a matter of technique alone. We believe our role extends to helping every patient finish their surgery in a state of calm.
Now, he can wear the clothes he wants. When we ask what patients most want to do after surgery, the answers are rarely grand.
His answer was: “Short sleeves, polo shirts — I want to finally wear, in comfort, all the clothes I avoided for fear my chest would show.” Having spent so many years hiding, ever since his growing years, his message for those with the same concern was just as clear.
"Get a consultation as soon as you can, and get the surgery that is right for you.
The self-esteem that stayed curled up for so long becomes that much lighter."
To those with the same concern
However long the hesitation lasted, everyday life after the decision feels that much lighter. Trueman Gwangju will take that one step with you.
