I Just Wanted to Sleep
Comfortably on My Back

When we ask patients what they most want to do after surgery, it is the simplest answers that stay with us the longest.

One patient wrote this: “I want to sleep comfortably, flat on my back.” Not some grand plan — just his bed, every night. From that one line, you can imagine how long he must have spent sleeping face-down or fussing over his position. Today, I would like to share his story.

His Biggest Worry

Would It Leave a Scar?

What worried him most was scarring.

“I was worried the removal would leave a scar, but the result was better than I expected, and that put me at ease,” he told us. Learning that plenty of others had wrestled with the very same concern was reassuring, too.

Many people put off their decision out of fear of scarring. That is why I keep incisions to a minimum and explain precisely, in advance, where and how any scar will remain. Shrinking the worry down to size is where the surgery truly begins.
