What Changed After Surgery

“If it's been on your mind,
I recommend starting with an examination.”

Back to Working Out, Without Worrying About Scars

The reasons people hesitate over gynecomastia surgery differ slightly from person to person.

Some think of the pain first; others, the recovery period. And quite a few put off the decision for a long time, worrying, “What if it leaves a scar?” Today, borrowing the story of a patient who recently had surgery with us, I want to write about how much that worry actually weighs.

Scars, and the Time It Takes to Return to Daily Life

What worried him most were scarring, and how long it would take to return to daily life and work after surgery.

But once the surgery was done, he told us the scar was practically invisible and recovery took less time than he had expected.

The incision for gynecomastia surgery is small, and its placement is planned to stay out of sight. The gap between the scar you vaguely imagine and the actual result narrows the more accurately you understand and prepare.

Clean, and Kind

The first impression when you walk through a clinic's door stays with you for a long time.

He summed that moment up in a short but clear phrase: “clean and kind.”

“Clean and kind”

The chest is not a part of the body anyone shows easily. That is why simply finding the space well kept, and the people who greet you warm and easygoing, lowers the emotional threshold considerably.

A Surgery That Passed Without Incident

When we asked about any memorable moments during the surgery, his answer was “nothing in particular.”

I read that calm answer as a good sign. It means everything passed quietly, exactly as expected, with nothing to startle or alarm him. Making surgery pass as a process rather than an event — that is what we care about most.

“I Want to Get Back to Working Out”

When we ask what patients want to do first after surgery, the answers are surprisingly modest.

His answer was “exercise.” He wanted to comfortably return to the workouts he had been putting off because of his chest.

Asked to leave a word for others with the same concerns, he answered:

“If it's been on your mind, I recommend starting with an examination.”

Once you resolve something that has weighed on you for a long time, the daily life you had put off naturally falls back into place. Trueman Gangnam will be with you for that first step.
