Don't Overthink It

We give a short questionnaire to those who have finished surgery. The person I would like to introduce today wrote a single line for each item, and in some boxes only a single word. And yet what those brief answers wanted to say was clear.

The biggest worry before surgery was pain. The answer left after surgery was this.

"Pain, almost none."

It is difficult to state uniformly that there is no pain at all. The degree of pain differs by the extent of surgery and by the individual. But when everything from anesthesia, to intraoperative care, to post-surgery pain management is prepared step by step, it often passes far more calmly than the vague fear one might have imagined.

The answer that all the staff were kind

For the first impression, they left a single line: that all the staff were kind. Because it was a line deliberately written by someone who answers only briefly, it read as all the more precious to us.

A single word: "posture"

In the box asking what they most wanted to do after surgery, they wrote a single word. Posture.

I often hear similar stories in the consultation room. Among gynecomastia patients, many have made a habit of hunching their shoulders forward because they are conscious of the protrusion of the chest. Yet such a stooped posture can stagnate blood and lymph circulation, which may actually worsen gynecomastia, and even after surgery it can hinder the skin from adhering closely to the body, affecting the result.

That is why I say that posture matters as much as the surgery. I imagine that this person's single word, "posture," held within it the wish to now live with the body upright.

Five words in the last box

As a message they wanted to pass on to those facing the same concern, they wrote this.

"Don't overthink it."

That said, this is this person's own experience. For those carrying the same concern, you may place, in the seat of worry, confirmation instead. It is enough to begin by knowing your own condition precisely (the degree of mammary gland development, the Simon grade) through an examination.

Good posture is a factor that affects the result as much as the surgery does. Both before surgery and after.
