The real work starts the day after surgery
The question men hold on to right up to the end is, surprisingly, not about the operation itself.
"What am I supposed to do once it's over?"
Surgery takes a day, but recovery continues after that. So there are quite a few men who delay their decision because they are worried about post-operative care. The patient I want to introduce today was one of them.
His worry was the care after surgery
His biggest concern was not the surgery but what came after it. Once he had finished recovering, he wrote this for us.
"The systematic aftercare made my recovery go smoothly."
Our work does not end the moment the operation ends. We check the progress on a set schedule and explain what to do and what to avoid at each stage of recovery. Simply knowing that you are not recovering on your own makes the time after surgery far less anxious.
About pain
When I asked what he remembered of the procedure, he answered that there was "almost no pain."
That was his own case; the degree of pain and the speed of recovery vary from person to person. Still, there is often a gap between the pain people imagine and the pain they actually experience. Just as he noted briefly that the kindness of the consultation stayed with him, his account overall was calm and concise. I read that brevity as a good sign, because it means there was no moment that stood out as particularly hard.
"The sooner you do it, the more you gain"
That was his answer when I asked what he would say to men with the same concern.
This came out of his own experience, and whether to have surgery is something to decide after confirming your own condition through an examination. But if what is holding you back is the period after surgery, I would suggest starting by asking in the consultation how recovery is managed. Most worry comes from not knowing.
