Everything I Worried About
Turned Out to Be Nothing
In the run-up to surgery, the mind fills with every kind of ‘what if.’
What if something happens during the operation? What if things take a bad turn? One patient wrote down exactly those worries. Yet looking back after it was all over, he said every one of them had been unfounded. Today, borrowing his calm, matter-of-fact review, I would like to speak to everyone carrying the same ‘what ifs.’
His Biggest Worry
The ‘What Ifs’ of the Operating Room
What worried him most were the bad things that might happen during surgery.
He had fretted in advance about the unexpected happening mid-operation. But once it was over,
“It was all needless worry”
was how he summed it up, in a single line. With gynecomastia surgery, the vague fear is very often far bigger than the actual experience. When you know precisely what will be done and how, and prepare accordingly, most of those ‘what ifs’ remain what they always were — worries that never come true.
First Impressions
A First Consultation, Lying Down
He described his first visit to the clinic as “quiet, with kind staff.”
What struck him most, he said, was the way the consultation was done.
“It was my first time consulting with a doctor while lying down — the examination and explanation were remarkably specific,”
he wrote. Having his chest examined directly while hearing a concrete explanation brought the hazy parts into sharp focus. An accurate examination leads directly to accurate reassurance.
During Surgery
Too Uneventful to Remember
When we asked about a memorable moment during surgery, his answer was, “I don't remember any.”
The time he entered with such tension passed so calmly that it left no memory at all. The moment he had worried about most turned out to be the blurriest of all. I take a review like this as a very good sign.
After Surgery
A Cheap Cotton T-Shirt Is All It Takes
When we asked what he most wanted to do after surgery, this was his answer.
“I just want to wear cheap cotton T-shirts.”
Not expensive clothes, nothing special. Just throwing on an ordinary T-shirt without giving his chest a second thought. That one line says everything about how hard that simple act had been for so long. And when we asked what he would say to others facing the same concern,
“I should have done it sooner.”
