The Pace of Recovery,
as Told by a Compression Garment

For most people facing surgery, the scene they picture most is not the operating table. It is what comes after — the recovery.

Dr. Minsu Kim Part 2 - Compression Garment

"How much will it hurt?" "When can I get back to my daily life?" These two questions are what keep people hesitating the longest.

Today, borrowing the story of a patient who recently had surgery, I would like to speak honestly about that stretch of time we call recovery.

The Size of the Worry vs. the Size of the Reality

This patient, too, worried most about how painful the surgery would be and whether he would be able to return to everyday life.

But once he actually went through it, he told us that aside from some minor discomfort from wearing the compression garment, the surgery was, on the whole, not a difficult experience.

With gynecomastia surgery, the fear we imagine is very often far bigger than the actual experience. The size of the worry and the size of the reality are not the same.

So That Undressing Never Feels Like a Burden

The chest is a part of the body that is hard to show anyone. That is why many patients find even undressing at the first consultation a burden.

"Undressing felt comfortable, and everyone — starting with my doctor — was kind"

We believe that the harder a concern is to talk about, the more important it is to have an environment where it can be shared comfortably.

The Compression Garment: Longer Than Expected

The moment this patient said he remembered most was an unexpected one: he was "surprised to learn the compression garment had to be worn longer than expected."

"I was surprised to learn the compression garment had to be worn longer than I expected"

We explain the recovery process without exaggerating or downplaying it. There is a reason behind the recommended garment-wearing period, and patients who follow it faithfully end up recovering more cleanly. It may be a little uncomfortable, but that time is what protects your result.

"A New T-Shirt, Worn with Confidence"

When we ask what patients want to do first after surgery, the answers are usually modest.

His answer was "being able to wear a new short-sleeve T-shirt with confidence." For someone who has long hidden his chest behind his clothes, that one thing is actually the biggest change of all.

"Being able to wear a new short-sleeve T-shirt with confidence"

When we asked what he would say to others with the same concern, he said that while recovery takes time, he was more than satisfied.

Recovery does not happen overnight. But when you know exactly what that time involves and prepare for it, the decision you reach at the end is one without regret. Trueman Gangnam will be with you through that process.
