As Long as I Didn't Overdo It, It Didn't Get in the Way

The first questions that come up in gynecomastia consultations are how much it hurts and how many days of rest are needed. Those two were also the worries the person I am introducing today carried before surgery. For people who have to set a surgery date while working, these two can be more pressing than the result.

A Period of Two Weeks

They wrote this in their review.

"I worried it would hurt a lot and get in the way of daily life, but the pain gradually got better after about two weeks, and in daily life, as long as I didn't overdo it, it didn't really get in the way."

In most cases, people describe the pain as not being as great as they had feared. However, you should know that this part differs from patient to patient. The degree you feel varies with the amount and location of the glandular and fatty tissue to be removed, your body type, and your usual sensitivity to pain, and how quickly it subsides varies as well. It is hard to present two weeks as a standard that applies to everyone.

The daily-life side matches what we advise. Sitting work and walking are possible relatively early, but for movements that use the upper body heavily and for lifting heavy things, we set the timing separately while watching your progress. Right after surgery you will wear a compression garment, and during this period it is better to avoid rotating your shoulders widely or repeatedly raising your arms above your head.

Words That Suddenly Falling Asleep Surprised Them

When I asked about memories from during the surgery, they answered like this.

"I had sedation, and I was surprised at how I suddenly fell asleep without thinking anything at all"

Gynecomastia surgery is performed under sedation. From the patient's point of view, all that remains is the moment of closing your eyes in the operating room and the moment of opening them in the recovery room. I think it is fortunate that memories of the time during surgery do not remain as a separate burden.

The Evening of the Surgery Day

They wrote that right after surgery the pain was severe enough that nothing they wanted to do came to mind, and that it subsided after about three hours. They said they thought of a cigarette instead, and this point needs to be addressed. Smoking reduces blood flow to the wound, slows recovery, and raises the possibility of the scar widening. We advise holding off for several weeks before and after surgery.

As their impression of the clinic, they wrote that the staff and my explanations were kind. People who come in for gynecomastia often receive explanations in a state where they cannot take it all in at one hearing, so I tend to go over the same points again at each visit.

The Answer at the Two-Week Mark

"About two weeks after surgery, I'm so satisfied!!"

It takes more time for swelling and bruising to subside and for the shape to settle. Even if you feel satisfied now, you should still come in for the remaining follow-up visits as scheduled. To those facing surgery with the same concern, I would like to say: do not measure your recovery speed against other people's reviews, but check it against your own progress at your examinations.

"A doctor proven by results and remembered for sincerity — a finish where the detail is different."
"Surgery is a matter of technique, but caring for a patient is always a matter of the heart. I explain not only the result but the process honestly, and think it through together with the patient so they can choose after fully understanding. Through years of male body contouring and men's surgery, one standard has not changed: to take responsibility from before the operation through afterwards, so that the patient does not regret this choice. That, to me, is what medical care is."
