A Compression Garment in Summer

The question people who come in during summer never leave out is about the compression garment: whether they can wear it for weeks in this season. For this person, who had surgery in June, that was also the biggest worry beforehand.

In the review they wrote briefly, "It was better than I expected." Starting with what the garment does: gynecomastia surgery removes glandular tissue and fat from inside the chest, so a space is left behind. Left alone, blood or fluid collects easily in that space, and the skin does not adhere to the tissue beneath in time. The compression garment presses on that space to reduce swelling and seroma and let the skin settle. So the wear time has to be kept early on; treating this period casually sometimes leaves regrets about shape later.

The wear period does not get longer because it is summer. Current garments breathe better than they used to, and once the early period passes and things stabilize, there is a set schedule for reducing wear. It is still hot. I will not claim otherwise. For people who come in during summer, we advise keeping a spare to change into and not leaving it on for long once it is soaked with sweat. While the wound has not yet healed, activities that involve soaking in water have to wait — and that is what people find most disappointing in summer.

Of the clinic, they said: "It was good that male staff were on hand." People who come in for gynecomastia often find the process of undressing for care a burden in itself. Having male staff for guidance, movement, and dressing changes is also meant to reduce that burden. They wrote that nothing from the surgery stayed with them — and in gynecomastia surgery, it is better that nothing particular arises to remember.

To others with the same concern, they left the note that even if you do not have surgery, it is "probably good to just come in for an examination without agonizing over it." In fact, quite a few people who come to the clinic have spent years not knowing whether they have gynecomastia at all. Some come having assumed it was simply weight and having tried, without success, to work it off. Whether what you feel is glandular tissue or fat, and what grade it is, determines from the outset whether this is a surgical matter. It is true that confirming comes first.

Get through the summer well, and I will see you at the next visit.
