“Why didn't I do this sooner?”

There's one thing we hear most often after surgery.
And it isn't about the results.

The shoulders that hunched without thinking, the short sleeves avoided every summer, the moments of quietly stepping to the back in group photos.
It's about how all of that is finally gone.

A Word Called Self-Esteem

When I talk with patients about body-image concerns, every conversation eventually leads to the same place.

Confidence. Self-esteem.

Before surgery, many patients find this hard to talk about.
Admitting that your appearance has worn down your self-esteem is never easy.

But I see it every day in my exam room — from the moment they wake up until they fall asleep, how much a person changes when the thing they were conscious of all day long finally disappears.

It May Not Be Uncomfortable at All

One vague fear surrounding surgery is the pain of recovery.
Of course, everyone is different. But some patients genuinely tell us there was “nothing particularly uncomfortable about it.”

Being more frightened than you need to be, and putting it off, often only stretches out the worry.

“If Someone Around You Is Struggling With This”

Many patients come after wrestling with it alone, but some open our door for the first time because someone close encouraged them.
The ones who found the courage to come together, and the ones who stood beside them and gave that gentle push.
I hope things go well for every one of them.
